FAMOUS ARTISTS

On the list of the most expensive paintings ever sold, you’ll find familiar artists like Jackson Pollock and Claude Monet, and Vincent Van Gogh. But one of the top paintings on the list also has one of the most intriguing stories behind it.

THE STORY

In 1907, Austrian painter Gustav Klimt (also famous for “The Kiss“) painted portraits of Adele Bloch-Bauer, wife of wealthy industrialist Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer. Adele died in 1925, and when the Nazis invaded Austria in 1938, Ferdinand was forced to flee the country and leave behind his home and his precious art collection. He died without ever recovering what he had lost.

HOW MUCH?

Recently, these two paintings, along with other Klimt works, were returned to Ferdinand’s descendants. In 2006, “Adele Bloch-Bauer I” was sold for $135 million, and in 2008 “Adele Bloch-Bauer II” sold for $88 million.

FYI: In the world of high-priced art, the most often reproduced painting is Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” which is considered to be the most recognizable painting in the world.
