Contemporary art refers to art that is produced today or which has been produced since World War II. It includes every style of art since 1950: from Abstract Expressionism in the 50s and 60s to Post Minimalism in the 70s to Post Modernism in the 80s to Internet art and Video Game art of the 90s and 2000s.
The contemporary art period has raised many questions about its styles and content. One that's still being asked (and probably always will be): "What is art?"
