If this is the bomb testing at the Bikini Atoll around WWII, then my dad was there. He was in the Navy and wrote an extensive report on what he witnessed. The experts at the time seemed to underestimate the power of radio-activity, as scientists and Navy personnel were boarding the various ships in the bomb zone just a day or so after detonations...I'll bet most of the men present for this event ended up dying of cancer later in life. My father did. On a lighter note, Dad noted that one of the underwater explosions created a water spout that was basically just salt since the intense heat evaporated all the water in the spout.
