This art nouveau painter -- most commonly referred to as simply "Steinlen" -- was born in Switzerland (1859-1923), but he fine-tuned his artistic skills in Paris, where he created poster art for the cabaret "Le Chat Noir" (the black cat
). Perhaps that is why most of Steinlen's well-known paintings have to do with those unlucky felines, which he apparently loved. Steinlen posters
also reflect his love for landscapes
, flowers, and nudes, and he eventually ventured into drawing and sculpting. His works are on display in museums around the world.
