This art nouveau painter -- most commonly referred to as simply "Steinlen" -- was born in Switzerland (1859-1923), but he fine-tuned his artistic skills in Paris, where he created poster art for the cabaret "Le Chat Noir" (the black cat). Perhaps that is why most of Steinlen's well-known paintings have to do with those unlucky felines, which he apparently loved. Steinlen posters also reflect his love for landscapes, flowers, and nudes, and he eventually ventured into drawing and sculpting. His works are on display in museums around the world.
